Oh, good morning. Ugh, it’s too bright; and can you please stop shouting like that? The calendar says it’s January 1, 2015, New Year’s Day, and there’s a good chance you’re hungover. If that’s the case, let’s mix a hangover remedy.
You’ve undoubtedly heard the theory of the “hair of the dog that bit you”: It’s believed that since a hangover is the first stage of alcohol withdrawal, the way to relieve the hangover is to start drinking again. Now, scientists haven’t reached a consensus on whether or not the “hair of the dog” works, so your mileage may vary.
That said, if you must drink to cure your hangover, I’d recommend a Corpse Reviver. The one and only Harry Craddock included two Corpse Revivers (so named because the drinks were so potent that they could wake the dead) in his 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book. Today we’re going to make the brandy based Corpse Reviver. There’s also a Corpse Reviver #2 that is gin based.
- 2 ounces Cognac
- 1 ounce Apple Brandy
- 1 ounce Sweet Vermouth
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
